Role Summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Tokyo-based Japanese Period Broker to join our team. You will work closely with Japanese shipowners and clients, supporting all aspects of Clarksons Japan’s Global Period Team business, primarily across Period, Projects, and Sale & Purchase (S&P). Based in Otemachi Financial City, one of Tokyo's premier business districts, you will work in a dynamic international environment, as part of Clarksons global network of industry-leading brokers. The role will focus on developing and executing period charter business across a range of dry bulk vessel segments, acting as a trusted intermediary between shipowners and charterers. Working within a fast-paced, international environment, you will be responsible for identifying commercial opportunities, negotiating charter agreements, building long-term client relationships, and delivering market intelligence and advice to clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced broker who enjoys building client relationships, developing business and working in an international environment.
What you’ll be doing
• Develop and maintain relationships with shipowners, charterers, operators, traders, and other market participants.
• Identify and pursue period chartering opportunities across the dry cargo sector.
• Market vessels and cargo requirements to appropriate clients and counterparties.
• Negotiate period charter fixtures and associated commercial terms on behalf of clients.
• Advise clients on market conditions, chartering strategies, vessel employment opportunities, and risk considerations.
• Monitor dry bulk shipping markets, freight trends, vessel supply and demand dynamics, and relevant economic developments.
• Maintain an active pipeline of business opportunities and manage fixtures from initial enquiry through to conclusion.
• Prepare and present market updates, business proposals, and commercial reports.
• Work closely with colleagues across Dry Cargo, Research, Sale & Purchase, and other business areas to maximise client opportunities.
• Ensure fixtures are concluded accurately and in accordance with internal policies and industry standards.
• Support the development of new business opportunities.
• Represent the company at client meetings, industry events, conferences, and networking functions with travel as required.
• Maintain accurate records of business activities, negotiations, and fixtures.
• Continuously develop market knowledge and stay informed of industry developments and emerging opportunities.
• Additional / ad hoc duties as required to meet the needs of the business.
What we’re looking for
Skills & Experience
• Fluent Japanese and English language skills (verbal and written), with the ability to communicate effectively in an international business environment.
• Proven experience in shipbroking, chartering, Sale & Purchase (S&P), or a related commercial shipping role, ideally within the dry bulk sector.
• Knowledge of period chartering markets, vessel employment strategies, and dry bulk shipping dynamics advantageous.
• Established network / or experience of working with Japanese shipowners, charterers, operators, traders, and other industry stakeholders.
• Commercial acumen with the ability to identify opportunities, negotiate fixtures, and drive business growth.
• Ability to provide market insights, commercial recommendations, and strategic advice to clients.
• Personable and sociable, with strong client relationship skills, and demonstrable experience of developing and maintaining partnerships.
• Work collaboratively with internal teams across Clarksons global network.
• Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work well in a dynamic market environment.
