Role Summary

The main purpose of a Shipbroker is to act as a specialist intermediary/negotiator between shipowners and charterers to arrange the employment of a vessel or to buy/sell ships on behalf of a client. We have a fantastic opportunity for a Broker intern to join our team in our Rio de Janeiro office. You will work alongside and support our experienced Brokers to help strengthen relationships with existing clients and help develop new business. We are looking for candidates with a genuine interest in shipping and the desire to build a successful career. Preferably, you will have some shipbroking experience (though not mandatory) and be keen to develop this. You will be driven and a self-starter, with strong relationship building skills, able to learn quickly.

 

What you’ll be doing

• Work alongside and support experienced brokers with day-to-day activities, to help drive revenue and develop client base.

• Maintain databases of vessel positions and sales activity.

• Perform market analysis and prepare market information and reports.

• Help to manage internal data flow of key market information.

• Undertake administrative tasks such as dealing with emails, assisting with contracts and correspondence.

• Help to field queries and establish and maintain effective relationships internally and externally.

• Establish and maintain effective relationships, internally and externally.

• Maintain accurate records and documentation and assist with producing internal and external reporting.

• Help to conduct post fixture support in a prompt and efficient manner.

• Continue to develop knowledge and expertise in the market space.

• Attend meetings and events where required.

• Additional / ad hoc duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

Other requirements

• Business, Economics, Engineering or International Relations recent graduate or student (with 12-24 months until graduation);

• Previous experience or exposure within broking desirable but is not mandatory;

• An interest in shipping/shipbroking;

• Effective communication skills (both verbal and written) including fluency in English;

• Personable and engaging, able to confidently build strong relationships;

• Commercial mindset;

• Driven, self-motivated and client focused;

• Strong numeracy skills and excellent presentation skills;

• Confident and able to work well under pressure, with ability to adapt;

• Strong attention to detail and focus on accuracy;

• Team player with a flexible approach;

• Good MS office skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
