Role Summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Platforms to join our team in London. The person in this role will work as part of the Global Platforms Leadership team and will be managing the delivery of services, systems and solutions through our Network, Systems and Infrastructure Teams. Additionally, this person will work with our architectural function to ensure that systems are in line with both architectural standards as well as our Global strategy and vision.

 

The Head of Platforms role holds day to day responsibility and accountability for the team which provides, delivers and manages the following technical services for the business globally:
• Active Directory
• VMWare ESXi, Horizon & VCentre
• Networking, LAN, WAN and wifi services
• Firewall and switch infrastructure
• Windows Server
• Communication services, Telephony etc
• Windows client engineering
• Intune and device management
• HPe server and storage hardware
• Exchange Services and infrastructure
• Windows clustering
• M365 cloud services
• Backup services
• Service automation
• Monitoring and alerting
• A variety of line of business applications

 

This role calls for skills in both technical leadership, and people management – guiding the team to deliver solutions which deliver value to the business, scale and are operationally sound.

What you will be doing
• Providing line management for the systems and platform engineering teams, covering
o performance management,
o goal setting
o upskilling capabilities, strengths, team dynamic and capacity
o ensuring a clear set of priorities are in place, shared and understood.
• Providing a single directional and escalation point for engineering and operations teams.
• Working with the business to understand their needs and upcoming projects, how IT fits into them and the right delivery.
• Ensuring a consistent delivery mechanism is adhered to, with the correct and right sized rigor and control, whether through Agile, Waterfall, Blended or Kanban styled delivery.
• Leading the global platforms leadership team, setting the standards for how we deliver services to the business and robustly assessing these continue to fit and meet the demands of the business globally.
• Proactively finding design improvements and opportunities with our current services which can be addressed before they become user impacting.
• Management and control of all initiatives, delivery tasks and improvement opportunities on the Global platform stage, aligned on a Backlog in delivery order with clear descriptions of the value, impact and timelines for each.
• Challenging and supporting the engineering team with design and implementation, you will play a role to them as their technical mentor.
• Working closely with our information security team to ensure new services do not create additional risk and addressing any identified risks.
 

What we are looking for

Experience & Knowledge
• Experienced engineering leader / (hands on), potentially from an architect background with experience of leading teams, as well as contributing individually (this role calls for both).

• Customer oriented, with a passion for delivering excellent service and for continuous improvement of services.
• Excellent communication skills, able to communicate well over the telephone, chat or face to face.

• Working with suppliers to specify the right solutions for our requirements and manage the delivery of those.
• Flexible and willing to work outside of the core hours if necessary – the global platforms team is responsible for a large portfolio of business-critical services and provides an escalation point 24x7.
• Able to adapt to and handle changing situations, one day may be designing integration for a LOB application into our existing estate, the next may be a new acquisition or service integration.
• Able to learn quickly and work within a fast-paced environment.
• Desire to learn and to undertake on-the-job training and continuous personal development.

Knowledge/experience of the following:
• VMWare ESXi & VCentre
• PowerShell scripting and automation
• Storage technologies
• Backup tools (ideally Commvault, but training can be provided)
• Azure AD (including, but not limited to conditional access, SSO, application registration, provisioning), M365 & Intune
• Windows Server / client
• Architectural standards
• ISO 90001 and GDPR technology requirements
• Coaching methodologies ideally ILM qualified
• Windows certificate services
• Active Directory (and associated technologies), Exchange Server, clustering and file servers
• SMTP
• HPe hardware
• Network routing / 802.1x / firewalling
• Cisco call manager
• Monitoring and alerting techniques
