Structured career paths

As a leading integrated shipping services provider, Clarksons offers many career development pathways reaching far beyond our the company’s shipbroking offerings –see Becoming a shipbroker. These encompass financial, research and port services together with the support functions needed by a global and publicly traded company.

All pathways are underpinned by the same philosophy: the need for continuous, through-career learning where specialist knowledge and skills complement a wider understanding of global trade and shipping.

The group’s learning and development model supports the on the job mentoring provided on a day-to-day basis by experts who helped Clarksons its industry-wide reputation.   Regular workshops, seminars and other events including ship and terminal visits provide informed insight across different commercial, financial, regulatory, technical, legal and operational subjects. The over-arching aim is to widen and deepen an understanding of Clarksons and its role in enabling global trade.

After successfully completing a probationary period, early career staff can also study for professional qualifications for example membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Career progression
One major benefit of joining our organisation is having the opportunity to work overseas, with colleagues and clients from different cultural backgrounds. International placements can last from a few weeks to a number of years.

“Working for a major integrated shipping services provider in such a global and diverse

industry as shipping provides a very powerful incentive to learn throughout your

chosen career pathway” .

Investing in people

Blended learning provides a range of ways and means to learn at Clarksons.

All new joiners benefit from an induction programme which covers the specific role of the individual and how this fits in to the wider group. Compliance and IT skills training are complementary learning opportunities in key areas of differentiation. In the case of the former, compliance training encompasses anti-bribery, sanctions, know your customer, anti-competition and other modules. In the case of the latter,  Clarksons’ unparalleled portfolio of cloud-based software tools such as SeaNet and Gateway encompass through-transaction decision-making support as well as cyber security training.

The company’s learning and development workshops, seminars and webinars delivered by industry experts are offered on an open-invite basis, either live or made available via our in-house IQ comms channel. There are no limits to the amount people with a strong professional curiosity can learn.

I joined Clarksons mid-way through

my career. I'd never worked in

shipbroking before but found the

onboarding process and on-the-job

training a great way to get up to

speed.

Finding the right team

Where appropriate, our people are given the opportunity to work in different offices with colleagues and clients from different cultural backgrounds. Such international placements can last from a few weeks to a numbers of years.

Our graduate programme also gives candidates the opportunity to rotate through different areas of broking so that you have a well-rounded experience and can find the right team for you in an area of the business that interests you the most.
